How to deal with unsolicited Chronic Illness advice.

You are here: Home / Podcast / How to deal with unsolicited Chronic Illness advice.

October 2, 2023 //  by Kerry Jeffery//  Leave a Comment

We all know that one of the biggest frustrations about living with chronic illness is the unsolicited ‘have you tried….?’ suggestions.

Especially when it’s being given by someone who has no experience or knowledge about what living in your body with your illness is actually like.

Even worse when it’s being given by another person with chronic illness who vehemently believes that their diet, supplement or protocol is the only right way and if it didn’t work for you, then you must be doing it wrong.

It’s something that we all experience and it very rarely ever feels helpful at all because generally, unsolicited advice always feels like criticism or judgement, especially when it comes from close friends and family.

Why do people do this and how can you deal with all the “have you tried…” suggestions or the aggressive advice giving?

Let’s talk about it this episode of The Emotional Autoimmunity Podcast, shall we? You can listen here on the blog or search and subscribe to The Emotional Autoimmunity Podcast on all podcast players and if you got some good from this episode, please leave me a review and share it with your chronic illness friends and communities.

I’m Kerry Jeffery,  Award Nominated, Internationally Certified Life Coach, Counsellor and Clinical Hypnotherapist.

When I first became chronically ill in 2014, I thought my life was over. I had lost my old self, my career and my ability to care for myself.

I was left sitting in the wreckage of my life trying to find my way back and I couldn’t find a therapist who could even begin to understand how I felt.

So, I became the therapist and coach that I needed to help me rebuild my life. I learned new skills and  created a new emotional framework to find my way to deal with the often complex emotional issues that come with chronic illness.

Now, I help people all over the world learn to do the same and go from surviving, to thriving.

Your new life with chronic illness needs new skills, strategies and expert support from someone who knows exactly how it feels.

You don’t have to keep doing this alone.

Testimonials

“Instead of trying to medicate the problem away or shrug issues off (like the traditional therapist/counsellor/psychiatrists I’ve encountered in the past) you helped me get to the very roots of my anxieties, fears and trauma.”
