Four years ago, Jessa Lewis was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis when she was pregnant with her daughter. Her initial response was anger.
Jessa had copies of her thyroid tests for the past years and the results were clearly there. Yet no doctor decided to investigate further, which is incredible since she had experienced two miscarriages previously.
Once the anger began to pass and Jessa began reading all of the risks of Hashimoto’s, not only for herself but for her pregnancy, she became terrified as to what could happen to them both.
The doctors told her that her levels of thyroid hormones were dangerously low and that she would need lots of monitoring of her thyroid levels. She also saw the dreams of finally having a natural birth going out the window.
Looking back, Jessa believes that being able to have her son pre-diagnosis was almost like a miracle given her two previous miscarriages that were most likely due to the Hashimoto’s.
After the birth of her daughter via c-section, Jessa experienced a massive flare as most Mothers with autoimmune conditions do.
Many women experience remission while in pregnancy and find that they can eat things, even gluten sometimes, that would have caused worsening symptoms and flares before. The hormonal changes that come post partum see your energy, focus and health decrease, just when you need them the most and all of the symptoms and flares of the disease coming back.
Jessa found that communication with her husband was key to let him know when she hit the wall from exhaustion and although he did his best, he struggled to understand just how bad she was feeling. It was important that she kept persisting to let him know that she needed him to step up until she was feeling better.
Jessa went off thyroid replacement, moved to another state in Australia and began to focus on re-building her career and eventually, formed her own business.
She had to learn self care and find ways to be flexible in her business and find how to work with it, rather than keep pushing through and working against it.
The biggest lesson she had to learn was making asking for help a priority.
Jessa’s story of moving through the grief, anger and overwhelm to finding her mojo and building up her own thriving business is inspiring.
